How to compare auto insurance quotes correctly

Two auto insurance quotes can look similar while providing very different protection. A useful comparison starts by standardizing the important parts.

Match your liability limits

Compare bodily injury and property damage limits line by line. If one quote uses lower limits, the lower price may not be a true savings.

Match collision and comprehensive deductibles

A $500 deductible and a $1,500 deductible create very different out-of-pocket exposure after a covered claim.

Compare optional coverages

Look at rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, uninsured/underinsured motorist protection, medical payments or personal injury protection where applicable, and any vehicle-specific add-ons.

Check the term length and total premium

Compare six-month with six-month or twelve-month with twelve-month policies. Monthly payment amounts can be misleading when installment fees or down payments differ.

Look beyond price

Consider claims service, billing options, policy management tools and whether the insurer offers the coverage features you actually want.

Quick method: Create one “target coverage” sheet, then ask every insurer or comparison service to quote those same selections.
