A simple preventive maintenance checklist for everyday drivers
Preventive maintenance is easier when it is treated as a routine instead of an emergency response. Your owner’s manual is the primary schedule to follow, but these categories are worth watching.
Monthly checks
- Tire pressure and obvious tire damage
- Engine oil level if your vehicle requires manual checks
- Windshield washer fluid
- Exterior lights
- New warning lights, leaks or unusual sounds
At regular service intervals
- Oil and filter service as specified
- Tire rotation and tread inspection
- Brake inspection
- Engine and cabin air filters
- Battery condition
- Fluid condition and replacement intervals
Before longer trips
Inspect tires, lights, wipers and fluid levels, and make sure your spare tire or inflation kit is usable.
Tip: Keep digital copies of repair receipts and service records. Good records make maintenance easier to track and may help when selling the vehicle.
